The Adult Learning Resource Center (ALRC) provides training and technical assistance for ESL and EL/Civics educators throughout Illinois through workshops, online courses, and other activities. See the ALRC Professional Development Catalogs for details on current offerings.

The basis of all ESL professional development provided by the ALRC is the Illinois Service Center Network’s Foundations of Effective ESL Instruction and the Illinois ESL Content Standards.

Assessment Options for ESL in Illinois
Assessment tools for adult ESL approved by the state of Illinois are: The BEST Literacy, the BEST Plus, and the CASAS Life and Work Series (Reading). Training is required for BEST Plus and CASAS testers, and strongly recommended for BEST Literacy testers. The ALRC provides training for all three tests. See the ALRC catalog for training information or contact Laurie Martin, lmartin@cntrmail.org, 224-366-8500.

I-DEA Community of Practice
The I-DEA Community of Practice offers a way for program administrators, instructors, and others involved with the I-DEA online ESL curriculum and modules to communicate and learn from each other. This Community of Practice meets in-person and virtually 2-3 times per year. Contact Laurie Martin, lmartin@cntrmail.org, to receive notices of meetings directly.

ESL Providers Group
The ESL Provider Group gives those administering or coordinating ICCB adult ESL programs the opportunity to share their expertise, explore best practices, and to learn from one another in an informal setting.  The group meets 3-4 times per fiscal year.  If you are responsible for the day-to-day operations of the ESL program including hiring and evaluating instructors, overseeing learner assessment, developing curriculum, and selecting instructional materials, this group is for you! Contact Laurie Martin, lmartin@cntrmail.org, to receive meeting announcements.
